Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Stockstill announced he has elevated Jason Spray to Head Football Strength Coach. Spray takes over for Russell Patterson.

"I really want to thank Chris Massaro and Coach Stockstill for this opportunity," said Spray. "There's not many people who get to work in this capacity at their alma mater and I am very grateful for that chance. It's exciting to me and I can't wait to get started."

Spray, which has been on staff at MT since 2002, was recently named the National Assistant Strength Coach of the Year by the NSCA. The Murfreesboro native is currently in his seventh year with the Blue Raiders where he has served as the head men's basketball strength coach while assisting with football during that span.

In basketball, Spray has been responsible for preparing and executing in-season and off-season strength and conditioning programs. He also assists in game and practice preparations and player development from a strength standpoint. Spray will continue working with the basketball program at least through the spring. Spray's duties in football saw him working primarily with all the skill positions, designing the athletes' supplemental intake and meal plans, and tracking each player's caloric assessment.

"I interviewed and talked to a lot of people because this was such a critical hire for our program," said Stockstill. "Due to NCAA rules, a strength coach has more access to our players than the coaches so it's important to have the right person.

"I have been around Jason for six years and I know how hard he works and the knowledge he possesses about the profession. He is very impressive, not only because of his work ethic, but for the ability to develop our players in all areas of strength and conditioning to speed and quickness to the proper nutritional habits. He has the energy, enthusiasm, and passion I was looking for in the position."

Spray is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. He is also certified as a strength and conditioning specialist by the NSCA and the CSCCA, and is certified by the National Association of Speed and Explosion. Spray is also certified by USA Weightlifting as a club performance coach and is certified as a sports nutritionist through the International Fitness Professional Association.

He also works with various professional athletes during the offseason. Spray's specialty is in plyometrics, which focuses on movements, explosion and flexibility rather than just muscle mass. The professional players like the emphasis.

Spray, who is also an expert contributor for Stack Magazine and Premier Players Magazine, is a graduate of Middle Tennessee where he was a three-year starter for the Blue Raider football team. He was named the 2000 Lifter of the Year, as voted on by his teammates.

Spray played on the first Division I-A football team at Middle Tennessee in 1999 and was the starting fullback in 2001, when the Blue Raiders posted an 8-3 record and tied for the Sun Belt Conference championship - also a first in the Division I-A era. The durable and hard-working Spray played in 32 career games at MTSU. He was named co-captain of the 2001 Sun Belt Championship team.

Spray earned his bachelor of science in May 2002 and his master of science in 2005. Spray is married to the former Karisse Baker and the couple has a son Jason Jr.

The Blue Raiders will begin winter workouts on January 17 while matt drills get underway on Feb. 13. Spring practice is scheduled to start on March 17.
