MTSU'S BLISSARD, STEWART
ARE COURAGE AWARD NOMINEES

DALLAS (FWAA) - Middle Tennessee receiver Shane Blissard and athletic trainer Robbie Stewart are the first weekly nominees for the 2011 Discover Orange Bowl FWAA Courage Award, to be announced at the end of the season.

Blissard Stewart

Blissard, a senior from Murfreesboro, Tenn., has returned to football after suffering an injury to his spleen during a scrimmage last spring. Stewart, an athletic trainer at the school, quickly diagnosed the symptoms, enabling Blissard to receive prompt treatment for the internal injuries.

Blissard was injured March 26 when tackled after a catch. Two defensive players hit him; a helmet speared him. Blissard suffered a ruptured spleen, fractured rib and bruised kidney. In addition, the hit caused pneumothorax, a collection of air in the pleural cavity (between the lungs and the chest wall).

"It was a normal hit," Blissard told the Daily News Journal of Murfreesboro, "and I thought the wind was knocked out of me."

Blissard returned to the sideline, but Stewart continued to monitor him. When Blissard vomited and then reported dizziness, Stewart took notice. Blissard's blood pressure abruptly changed, too. Stewart had previous experience with a ruptured spleen.

"Robbie recognized it, even though it's not something you see that often," Drew Shea, Middle Tennessee State's director of sports medicine, told the Daily News Journal. "But for Robbie to pick up on that is pretty impressive."

Blissard was quickly transported to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery less than 90 minutes after the hit. He lost more than 3-1/2 liters of blood from internal bleeding from the spleen, and underwent a second surgery the next morning after losing more blood because of a damaged vessel.

"When I finally got the phone call that said, 'We're in surgery and he's stable,' that's when the relief came over me," Stewart told the Daily News Journal.

Doctors told Blissard's mother Stewart's quick actions saved her son's life.

"Robbie is the hero here," Missy Blissard told the Daily News Journal.

Blissard, a walk-on who has forged a playing role for the Blue Raiders, recovered well and returned to football this fall. He caught passes in the first two games, extending his personal streak to 12 straight games, before being shut out in the third.

For the sixth straight year, the Football Writers Association of America and the Discover Orange Bowl will announce a weekly nominee for the Discover Orange Bowl/FWAA Courage Award each Wednesday during the season. A blue-ribbon panel will determine the award's recipient from those weekly nominees. The recipient of the Courage Award will be announced in December and presented with the trophy in conjunction with this year's Discover Orange Bowl.

The Courage Award was created by ESPN The Magazine's senior writer Gene Wojciechowski, also an FWAA member. A select group of FWAA members vote on the recipient each year. The requirements for nomination include displaying courage on or off the field, including overcoming an injury or physical handicap, preventing a disaster or living through hardship.

Previous winners of the FWAA's Courage Award are Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand (2010), the University of Connecticut football team (2009), Tulsa's Wilson Holloway (2008), Navy's Zerbin Singleton (2007), Clemson's Ray Ray McElrathbey (2006), the Tulane football team (2005), Memphis' Haracio Colen (2004), San Jose State's Neil Parry (2003) and Toledo's William Bratton (2002).

MT Special Teams Are Special...

They are called special teams for a reason and there is no question they can alter the outcome of any game. That philosophy is the rule at Middle Tennessee, since Coach Stockstill's arrival five years ago he has placed a big emphasis on making sure our special teams are exactly that, SPECIAL.

After blocking Troy's first punt attempt on Saturday the Blue Raiders moved into a tie for 2nd place in a very interesting special teams category with some very elite company. Middle Tennessee is now tied for 2nd most kicks blocked in the nation since 2008.

Total Kicks Blocked since 2008
1.  Fresno State, 21
2.  Houston, 18
     Middle Tennessee, 18
4.  Texas, 17
5.  Florida, 16
6.  USC, 15
7.  Louisiana, 12
8.  Rutgers, 11
9.  Air Force, 10

Top 5 In-Conference Rivalry...

After doing a little research on this game we found an interesting viewpoint of this Sun Belt Conference rivalry game. Graham Watson of ESPN.com ranked the top Non BCS In-Conference rivalries and look who slips in at the 5th spot...

5. Middle Tennessee State vs. Troy (Battle for the Palladium) -- I'll be honest, I picked this rivalry because of the story behind the battle's name. According to that mythology, the Palladium is a wooden statue that fell from heaven and was kept at the Temple of Athena in the city of Troy. The Palladium was stolen by a Raider during the Trojan War, which led to the fall of Troy. This is young rivalry -- only seven games -- but a closely contested one. Troy leads 4-3, but this decade the series is split 3-3, which has sometimes cost both teams the Sun Belt title.

Blue Raiders making dreams reality...

With the 2011 NFL Regular Season about to get started and final roster cuts being made, the success of four former Blue Raiders so far in this NFL season made us pause a moment and think about a regular saying around the football offices. Some may consider it just coach speak or a catchy recruiting cliche when you hear it, but there are four guys on NFL rosters today that are showing that Coach Stockstill's words carry some pretty sharp teeth. Coach Stockstill is known for his strong belief that Middle Tennessee is a special place and that the program being built here is doing some great things. He sums all that up by always saying, "You can accomplish all your goals here at Middle Tennessee. You can graduate, win conference championships, go to bowl games and play in the NFL all by coming to Middle Tennessee." Never before have there been better examples of that statement than the four Blue Raiders that just took their places on NFL rosters. Don't be mistaken, making the NFL isn't the only criteria for labeling a Blue Raider a success and singling these guys out in no way diminishes all the other Blue Raiders that have achieved success on the field and in the classroom to help build the program to what it is today. These guys are simply shining examples of how prophetic and true Coach Stockstill's words are if you buy into this program's philosophy, use the university's resources to the fullest and allow your time here to mold and shape you into the person you were meant to become all along. If you search the internet for these guys the common theme between all of them is how they stand out from the crowd with their dedication, hard work, extra time and effort on the details, professionalism and how they seize every opportunity. These guys have been able to turn their dreams into reality in every aspect of their life, on the field and in the classroom, because they bought into the philosophy here and during their time on campus built the foundation for the men they have become. Lets take a look at what these former Blue Raiders have accomplished to really see if the "proof is in the pudding".....
