Tanner named Campbell Trophy Semifinalist...

Selected as the best and brightest from the college gridiron, The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced today the 121 semifinalists for the 2010 William V. Campbell Trophy (formerly known as the Draddy Trophy), endowed by HealthSouth, and the candidates for the 2010 NFF National Scholar- Athlete Awards.

Middle Tennessee's Phillip Tanner made the prestigious list. The senior owns a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and has already earned his degree. Tanner, a three-time academic all-district winner, is currently enrolled in graduate school where he is studying sports management.

Tanner leads the Blue Raiders in rushing after four games with 309 yards to go with a team-high five touchdowns. The Dallas, Tex., native is coming off a 104-yard effort in the win at Louisiana.

Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, semifinalists must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The trophy was renamed last fall in honor of Bill Campbell, the chairman of Intuit, former player and head coach at Columbia University and the 2004 recipient of the NFF's Gold Medal.

The NFF Awards Committee will select and announce up to 15 finalists on Oct. 28. Each finalist will be recognized as part of the 2010 NFF National Scholar- Athlete Class, receiving an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship. The Campbell Trophy winner, who will have his scholarship increased to $25,000 and receive a 25-pound bronze trophy, will be announced live at the NFF's Annual Awards Dinner on December 7 at the prestigious Waldorf=Astoria in New York City. A total distribution of $277,000 in scholarships will be awarded that evening.

Stockstill holds 14th highest APR...

So the first thing you may be asking is what exactly is the APR and why is it important??

What is the APR?
The APR is a numeric measure used to track the academic performance of NCAA teams semester by semester. Each student-athlete is assigned two points per semester, one point for being academically eligible and a second point for staying in school. The formula takes a teams total points and divides it by the total points possible then this value is multiplied by 1,000 to get the team's APR score. Teams that fall below 925 points, 925 is equal to a 50% graduation rate, face possible sanctions and penalties.

The Academic Progress Rate (APR) was designed in 2003 by the NCAA to reveal more transparency regarding the performance of NCAA teams in the classroom and to help hold universities more accountable. Prior to 2010 the APR score was only tied to a university's teams but in order to provide more open and accurate information along with increased accountability for coaches the NCAA now records APR scores for every Division I football head coach. This allows anyone to track the APR scores of a coach throughout his entire career.

Coach Stockstill is widely known for his successes in boosting Middle Tennessee's APR from one of the NCAA's worst to one of its best. The NCAA has recognized this achievement,NCAA story on MTSU, and many schools throughout the NCAA have even studied MTSU's model and tried replicate their own version of the Stockstill/MTSU system. Recently fanhouse.com came out with a review of all of the APR ratings for every current Division I head football coach. The research compiled by fanhouse.com is the average APR score for each head coach including every school and year they were a head coach between 2003-2009. After reading this article we thought it would be interesting to see how Coach Stockstill measures up to some of the other head coaches across the country. When we sifted through the statistics there are some very eye opening and notable facts about just how impressive Coach Stockstill has been in regards to his APR rating which currently sits at 968.

- Stockstill ranks 14th highest in the entire FBS

- Stockstill's #14 ranking ties him with legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno

- The #14 ranking also ties Stockstill with Jim Harbaugh who is the head coach at academic power Stanford

- This is how Coach Stockstill's 968 rating would be ranked if he were stacked up against coaches in each of the      BCS conferences
      ACC- #7
      Big East- tied for #2
      Big Ten- tied for #2
      Big 12- #1
      SEC- #1
      PAC 10- tie for #1

- Stockstill ranks #1 in the Sun Belt Conference by a resounding 26 points

Help MT win the Presidents Cup...

As we posted earlier there is another competition this week involving MTSU & Austin Peay and its not going to be decided on any playing field and there are really no losers in this game. The Daily News Journal and The Leaf-Chronicle are sponsoring the inaugural Presidents Cup Trophy to recognize the school that collects the most school supplies before the game this Saturday. In Rutherford County, school supplies will go to children in Rutherford County Schools and Murfreesboro City Schools. There are bins on both campuses for the collection of these items and local business and individuals are also encouraged to participate. Classroom supply items have been given point values and the winner will be announced at this Saturday's game between the Blue Raiders and Governors.

Remember that in addition to traditional school supplies the contest also accepts donations of other items like carpet squares, wallpaper and paint.

To learn more about this contest or to find out how you can help MTSU win contact the drive director, SGA Philanthropic Director, Erika Maclin at sgaphil@mtsu.edu or call 615-898-2464

President McPhee visits practice...

After the team's light workout on Tuesday evening MTSU President Dr. Sidney McPhee stopped by to speak to the team before Thursday's season opener against Minnesota. Dr. McPhee's visits are a yearly tradition that the players and coaches enjoy because he always provides some some classic light-hearted comments and some motivational content. A loud and proud supporter of Coach Stockstill and the football program, Dr. McPhee complimented the team on their hard work in the classroom and on the field and expressed how much he wants each player to do their very best in every aspect of their life.
