August 2010 Archives
As you probably know through our blog updates during the summer there have been some upgrades to the Blue Raider Football Gameday room and weight room complex. New flooring, projectors and other video equipment have made the space more functional and easier to use. Well now come some of the creature comforts...Today a delivery of personalized MT chairs arrived and the support staff quickly unpacked them for today's team meeting. These chairs are the same style chair that is used during the NCAA Final Four but as you can see are proudly showing our MT logos. These chairs are also more comfortable and easier to manage than the old chairs that were breaking down and had retractable arm rest/desk tops attached which made them bulky.
MTSU and Austin Peay have put together a great contest that will benefit several schools in the Middle Tennessee area. Read this article from the DNJ.com about the inagural President's Cup Trophy...
The competition between MTSU and Austin Peay State University won't be limited to their Sept. 11 football game. The Daily News Journal and Clarksville's newspaper, The Leaf-Chronicle, are sponsoring the inaugural Presidents Cup trophy to honor the most successful campus collection of school supplies leading up to the game. The local beneficiaries of MTSU donations will be Rutherford County Schools and Murfreesboro City Schools, while supplies collected by APSU will go to Teacher's Warehouse, a long-term classroom supplies resource for teachers. "It is a great opportunity for the two universities to compete in a spirited activity with the result benefiting both of our communities," says Danny Kelley, MTSU's Associate Dean of Student Life. "And it comes at time when the schools could really use the supplies they are going to receive." MTSU's donation drive will be led by its Student Government Association, which will scatter some 25 or so collection bins around campus by Friday. Other bins will be placed at specific events. The competition runs through Sept. 10. Classroom supply items have been given point values, and all the bins on each campus will be collected each day and tallied. During the schools' football game at Floyd Stadium on Sept. 11, the winning school will receive the Presidents Cup presented by Andrew Oppmann, president and publisher of both Gannett Tennessee newspapers. "The Daily News Journal and The Leaf-Chronicle are thrilled to sponsor the award and encourage the good works being done on both campuses," says Oppmann, who suggested the campus-to-campus charitable competition to MTSU President Sidney McPhee and APSU President Tim Hall. Point person on the drive for MTSU's Student Government Association is SGA Philanthropic Director Erika Maclin, a junior from Memphis. "For sure, we want to win the football game," she says. "But it would also be awesome if MTSU won the Presidents Cup, too. That would make for a perfect day." In addition to traditional supplies like crayons, glue and pencils, the list of needed supplies can include non-traditional items such as carpet squares, wallpaper and paint. Local organizations, businesses and individuals are also being solicited for donations. "The local schools have already started," Maclin said, "and we want to make sure the students have an abundant amount of school supplies to last throughout the year."

Here are some shots from Sunday's late practice...
Today the heat and humidity was up in Murfreesboro but that didn't stop the team from having a good Monday practice as game week for Minnesota has begun. Coach Stockstill praised the team's effort and enthusiasm today but continued to remind them to focus on the small details that it takes to be successful. The team will get the rest of the day off before returning on Sunday for meetings and a late afternoon practice.
Here are some shots of today's action... ![]() The Middle Tennessee Football Preview will air all across the southeastern United States on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CDT) on CSS The show will feature interviews with Blue Raider Head Coach Rick Stockstill along with Offensive Coordinator Mike Schultz and Defensive Coordinator Randall McCray. Director of Broadcasting Chip Walters serves as host. There will also be feature packages highlighting the battle for positions on both sides of the ball. In addition to the initial airing on CSS, encore presentations will take place on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. on Comcast CSN 49 in Middle Tennessee. Comcast will also offer the Blue Raider Football Preview "on demand" for customers with the digital box. (Story from MTSU Athletic Communications)
Coach Stockstill shares his thoughts on yesterday's practice.
As high school students across the country start back to school this fall another important event in most of their lives is also looming in the near future. What could this big event be you ask? Its the standardized tests, ACT & SAT, that high school juniors and seniors take as a annual right of passage to determine their transition into the college world. For student-athletes these tests are even more important because their scores must stand up to not only college standards but also NCAA standards which are set on a sliding scale alongside high school GPA based on the NCAA approved Core Courses (See Below). Another reason that standardized tests scores are so important is because student-athletes cannot take official visits to NCAA schools without a standardized test score.

Earlier today before Coach Stockstill's weekly press conference for the Minnesota game MTSU Athletic Director, Chris Massaro, addressed the media on the situation concerning MT quarterback Dwight Dasher.
Coach Stockstill is asking you to join him and the thousands of other AFCA members as they help fight Duchenne muscular dystrophy through the Coach to Cure MD program. Coaches across the country are joining together to use their visibility and influence to help battle this disease.
The goal of the program is simple: raise national awareness of the disorder and raise money to fund research for a cure. Our approach to reaching these goals is also simple. One football Saturday of each season (this year it will be on September 25, 2010) AFCA coaches nationwide agree to promote Coach To Cure MD. By wearing armbands, mentioning Coach To Cure MD during on and off-field interviews, and in some instances doing even more extensive media relations around the date, coaches are rolling up their sleeves and proudly getting involved. This story was just recently posted on MTSUnews.com, exciting times to be a Blue Raider!
MTSU once again is receiving accolades from the education-services company The Princeton Review, joining 133 institutions recommended in the "Best in the Southeast" section of its website feature, "2011 Best Colleges Region by Region." Collectively, the 623 colleges named "regional best" constitute about 25 percent of the nation's 2,500 four-year colleges. The Princeton Review asked students to rate their schools based on accessibility of the professors, the quality of food and campus life in general. The company's staff also based their evaluation on the quality of academic programs and observations during visits to campus over the years. "We are proud to once again be listed among the 'Best in the Southeast' by The Princeton Review," said MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee, noting that the company also gave the university the honor in 2008. "We are committed to continuing Middle Tennessee State University's long-standing tradition of offering our students outstanding academic programs in the kind of nurturing environment which addresses their individual needs. Our continued success is due to the hard work of our outstanding faculty and staff." "We're pleased to recommend Middle Tennessee State University to users of our site as one of the best schools to earn their undergrad degree," said Robert Franek, senior vice president/publishing for The Princeton Review. "We chose it and the other terrific institutions we name as 'regional best' colleges mainly for their excellent academic programs." The Princeton Review is a for-profit educational preparation company that offers test preparation for standardized achievement tests and advice on college admissions. Forbes magazine ranked MTSU as the No. 1 public institution in Tennessee, as well as one of the Top 50 higher-education "Best Buys" in the nation and one of the top 100 U.S. public universities, in its 2009 "America's Best Colleges" listing. Chances are you haven't been able to visit Floyd Stadium over the past two weeks but there some changes to help make your visit a little more aesthetically pleasing. Throughout the concourse areas of the stadium new artwork has been added to the concrete pillars. These banners contain images of Blue Raiders from the past few years and also have some advertisements from local business. This partnership looks to be a great way to help improve Floyd Stadium.

A little glimpse inside a drill with new Defensive Line Coach John Palermo....
Today's camp player spotlight is on Senior Offensive Lineman Mark Fisher. Mark is well known for his leadership, toughness and football IQ and must take a strong leading role on this year's team. Following today's enthusiastic practice Coach Stockstill pointed to Mark as one of the reasons things were more upbeat and urgent today.
The quality isn't the greatest because the lighting wasn't the best to work with but here are a few shots of the team's walk-through yesterday inside the Murphy Center that was caused by the bad weather.
Today's camp spotlight is on Junior College transfer Eric Russell from Cerritos, CA. Eric is a safety and could also contribute on special teams this season. Coach Stockstill and all the defensive coaches have been raving about Eric and his abilities, he is starting to turn heads with his athletic prowess and nose for the football similar to senior safety Jeremy Kellem.
The Tennessean did a interesting story recently on the quality of athletes college football athletes coming out of the state of Tennessee. Middle Tennessee is known for recruiting the states of Georgia and Florida but Coach Stockstill also makes it a point of emphasis to recruiting players out of our home state of Tennessee when possible because he thinks highly of the state's talent...
"Middle Tennessee State Coach Rick Stockstill also has seen Tennessee talent as an assistant at Clemson and recruiting coordinator at South Carolina." ""To me, there are just as many quality players in this state as there have been in any other state I've ever recruited," Stockstill said. "I think there are tremendous football coaches in this state, and I think there's a lot of talent in this state. I'd put Tennessee kids up against any I've ever recruited.""

After a weekend of nothing but football on their minds the players have to get back into academic mode this morning as they still have four days of summer school left to go. Coach Stockstill makes academics a priority so meetings ended earlier last night so players could go to their rooms and catch up on school work and make sure to get some sleep. The next few days will be mentally demanding for the players as they must juggle final exams while trying to learn football terminology for defensive/offensive/special teams installation. This week practice will closely resemble our spring practice routine with practice being held later in the afternoon. Here is how the next few days will be set up for the players...

To kick it all off we are giving you a look at the special video Coach Stockstill showed the team at yesterday's late night team meeting. To give proper credit narration of the video was originally done by Yogi Roth a former staffer at ESPN & USC. Then our video coordinator Andrew Rossetti put his Blue Raider touch on the video and music and the rest is history. Needless to say the guys were fired up and ready to go after this video last night. (We have touched up a little audio to make it more family friendly).
Being prepared is an essential factor in college football, its why
coaches and players put such emphasis on watching film and having
scripted game plans.
The same is true for fans that plan to attend practice during the Blue Raiders' fall camp this August. Whether you are a faithful fan that has experience attending practice or a rookie visiting practice for the first time, this guide will help you have the best experience possible. This season practice is open for the first 10 days of fall camp which gives fans an awesome opportunity to get up and close to the Blue Raiders while they prepare for the 2010 season. Open Camp Schedule (August 6-15) Friday, August 6: 3:40 PM to 6:00 PM Saturday, August 7: 3:40 PM to 6:05 PM Sunday, August 8: 3:10 PM to 5:30 PM Monday, August 9: 5:20 PM to 7:15 PM Tuesday, August 10: 5:20 PM to 7:15 PM Wednesday, August 11: 5:20 PM to 7:15 PM Thursday, August 12: 5:20 PM to 7:15 PM Friday, August 13: 7:10 PM - 8:50 PM Saturday, August 14: 4:40 PM - 6:30 PM (scrimmage) Sunday, August 15: No practice but will serve as makeup for weather *Remember all times are subject to change due to inclement weather Where is practice held? The Blue Raider practice fields are located on the northwest corner of the Middle Tennessee campus. Both fields are adjacent to the Dean Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium and the Reese Smith Jr. Baseball Stadium. All practices will take place on these fields except for scrimmages unless inclement weather forces a move inside Floyd Stadium. Where can I park? Parking is available in the large parking lot just off Greenland Drive. How long is practice? Most practices are usually in the 2-3 hour time range as fall camp is a critical time to get as much learning in as possible. Practice will begin with a period of warm-up drills and will progress into individual work, positional match-ups and then group competition which is similar to a game situation. What to wear? Make sure to pay close attention to the local weather reports and dress accordingly. Since there is no shade or covered areas prepare for the sun and heat with sunscreen, hats, etc. Where can I sit? There are metal bleachers located on the North end of the practice fields set up specifically for fans to watch practice. What is the field setup? There are two full football fields that run North-South and parallel to each other. There is only a small border around each field so we ask that you stay near the bleachers in the North end of the field and always be ready to jump out of the way if a drill is headed in your direction. Why is there a horn and numbers that change? Similar to the bells in school signal a change in classes, the horn at practice keeps everyone organized. Each day coaches review the plan for practice and develop a very detailed script for the day. Practice is broken down into segments or periods that contain certain drills. The horn signals to players and coaches that it is time to change segments and the rotating number corresponds with the specific period of practice so coaches can always find their place in the day's script. Is there food available? No there is no food or drinks sold at practice but there are several convenience stores and restaurants located right across Greenland Drive. Can I take pictures? No, photography and video is NOT allowed during practice. However, you can take as many pictures as you like following the end of practice. Are autographs ok? Absolutely, players and coaches will be available for autographs following each practice
Even though the thermometer is reaching 100 degrees with a real feel at least 125 (temperature on the playing surface can add 20-25 degrees) the Shaw/Sportexe Turf Maintenance crew is hard at work preparing Johnny "Red" Floyd Stadium for the Blue Raiders' 2010 season. Floyd stadium gets quite a workout during the year from the football team, Band of Blue and all the other athletic teams that use the surface to train during the off-season. Making their annual visit the crew is busy performing several duties to ensure that the Blue Raiders are playing on one of the finest playing surfaces in the country. The crew is busy straightening yard lines, evening out the rubber pellets along the surface and stitching any areas that may be working loose.

The Denver Broncos officially kicked off their season with the opening of training camp yesterday. After signing with the Broncos as a undrafted free agent in late April former MTSU wide receiver Patrick Honeycutt has worked hard to keep his place with the team. Honeycutt is still on the roster at the beginning of training camp and we wish him the best of luck as he fights to survive the NFL's mandatory roster cuts.
